Just because you abstract it doesn't mean your not taxing poor people further away. That's not really fair to poorer people in other neighborhoods that they're being forced to pay premiums on anything that comes into a port to subsidize a JC commuter. Still, because there's a public interest in maintaining the roads even though the profit incentive is nonexistent, it still makes sense for the government to invest public dollars there. Maintaining them is a money losing proposition for governments. The vast majority of roads out there are not tolled. ![]() Trains aren't the only example of this either. Yes, you spend $X subsidizing the service, but you get $Y back in terms of both marginal tax dollars and all the intangible benefits that come with better regional mobility. Governments around the world that value mobility believe that the public subsidy is a net positive. ![]() The difference between what the public pays in fares and the true cost of the service is the public subsidy. This is true in NYC, DC, Chicago, SF, etc., so there's no reason to think the PATH needs to be profitable from fares alone. #PATHLESS IS THE WAY REDDIT SEVIN LIONS UPGRADE#if PATH were self sustaining financially any money it was able to grab from other things could be money to expand and upgrade the system, rather than to just keep the electricity bill paid.įarebox recovery rates are always well less than 100% for subway projects. PATH only makes half it's budget via fares, and even doubling would still be a cheap commute on both the national level and certainly the region. One proposal people have floated is make PATH more self sustaining. Some people like to pretend JC houses the most valuable people in the city who bring trillions to the region, but reality is, even if the system shut down, property values would fall and people would take the bus. PATH isn't a priority, even Port Authority doesn't try to hide that. The airports and seaports are billion dollar systems that sustain the economy in the region, so yea. NJ Transit doesn't want it, the MTA doesn't want it, so legally Port Authority is forced to keep it. PATH is a money looser Port Authority would love to hand off (and has tried repeatedly over the years). #PATHLESS IS THE WAY REDDIT SEVIN LIONS MODS#Have a suggestion for the sidebar/wiki?
